History lesson about Roller Skating….especially for those of us who grew up at the Mission Roller Rink.

  • It was the most popular sport in the 1950’s and was integrated into almost every school system.
  • In 1860 the quad skate was introduced with 2 sets of wheels, and they fastened to shoes
  • 10 years later the toe stop was added – popularity soared with this addition- since crashing was no longer your main way of stopping 😊
  • 1902 the Chicago Coliseum opened a public skating rink – this paved the way for skating rinks nationwide.
  • In the 1980s rubber wheels were introduced with provided a quieter, smoother ride, and no damage to gymnasium floors.  Prior to that the wheels were made of ivory, wood, copper, plastic.

Have a blessed week,

Love,

Gatha

Good afternoon from Basehor Kansas!
I had another great weekend at Pomona lake this past weekend. It was wonderful. Had great meals and great swimming. The water felt great! We had samlon and grilled Brussels sprouts the first night. Pancakes bacon and eggs then grilled shrimp tacos with a wonderful slaw, for breakfast susuage, eggs and wofermans enlightens muffins. When we got home we had pizza for dinner. Spent time with Ellaina and the dogs.

Trooper from across the street came over to great me when I got home. The baby was in the hospital again Friday to Sunday this time. They are having a struggle. Now the mom is sick. I have great neighbors who helped with the dog while I was gone.

Roller skating and Ice skating were 2 of our favorite things to do growing us. It was pretty inexpensive. Cheri had her own skates, we “borrowed” and skated around the basement. Always got into trouble doing that. But it was fun.

Happy Father’s Day to all my brothers and nephews, You are all great dads!

Dennis I am so sorry to hear about your mother, Linda. How totally unexpected. You and Your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hope You all have a wonderful Blessed Week, Love, Prayers and Big Hugs!

My roller skating memory is Mission Skating Rink 1968 the Turtles playing holding Mark Shafts hand singing Happy Together and trying not to fall down!  Great info Gatha!

Dennis came home Saturday. We’re waiting to hear when the funeral arrangements are made. Linda prepaid her funeral.

We’re in the afternoon thunderstorm season and the barometric pressure changes play havoc with my headaches. First morning I didn’t wake up with one. We took a chance golfing yesterday even though we were supposed to get a thunderstorm. It missed us. Found out the distraction of a migraine works well with golf. Made it home in time to see the last few holes of the Masters. Exciting finish. Feel bad for Rory.

Have a blessed week. Thank you to all you great brothers/fathers and for the great job you did raising your beautiful children.

Love
