So why Mastodon and a web (blog) site? Short answer: why not? Small secret: it actually only costs $20 a year to reserve the domain name, but nothing to install and maintain the servers if you’ve already got the hardware (which…is only ~$70 for a mini PC now).
Longer answer: having a blog site plus social media allows for more diverse conversation and content. Want to share a quick update on something fun, special, or troubling? That’s what Mastodon (schleicher.social) is for. Want to share a longer update or post, like how the week was, how vacation went, or something else that just deserves more than a short few sentences? That’s what the blog site (family.schleicher.social) is for.
Family.Schleicher.Social
As a blog site, Family Schleicher can be used for just about anything. Create an account and post away. It’s meant to be a place to share big events, information, photos, and anything else we can think of. The flexibility of WordPress means if you can think it, we can probably do it. You’re only going to get emails that you request (like post updates from people you follow), and if you want no emails but want to just visit occasionally to see what’s new, that’s fine too.
The way its set up right now is that you’ll only receive emails from comments or posts you’ve made, and any replies to those posts or comments. The Schleicher Bot will forward and post the Boar Report weekly, so feel free to comment away; I recommend following the bot to get an email when the Boar Report posts.
Schleicher.Social
Schleicher.Social on Mastodon is for those daily, momentary check-ins. Use, and think of it, like Facebook, complete with a mobile app and all. You’re not going to write a novel on Facebook (although I’ve seen people try). People spend, on average, 5 seconds or less on posts in social media as they scroll through their stream. We want to see those daily updates with spur-of-the-moment thoughts and happenings. Bonus: you’ll get birthday and anniversary reminders if you use Tooot as your mobile app. So Tooot away, and show us how to live life.
